Modern dance is a dance style that focuses on a dancer’s own interpretations instead of structured steps, as in traditional ballet dancing. Modern dancers reject the limitations of classical ballet and favor movements derived from the expression of their inner feelings.

Jazz dance combines techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with the current forms of popular dance. Jazz also has its own movement vocabulary ranging from the isolation of certain body parts to the movement of the entire body with the accents of musical rhythms.

Level I dancers will begin class with floor stretches specific to developing strength in their feet.  Dancers will then go to the ballet barre and learn basic steps and positions, which will be combined to create simple combinations.  They will be taught about maintaining correct posture, which in ballet, involves everything from the feet up through the top of the head.  After leaving the barre, dancers will continue stretching, working the hamstrings, calves, quadriceps, and back muscles.  They will learn the names of the steps and what they mean in the French language.  Dancers will attempt new jumps and execute them with more repetition.
